'Apoorva Ragam', Siby Malayil's new film, and the one that marks his twenty fifth year in films to boost; claims to play an a typical melody. It would be wrong to say that the film lacks some distinctiveness; on the contrary, its strained attempt to create a uniqueness is what mars it.
Roopesh (Nishan) and Tommy (Asif Ali) are best friends and college mates. When Roopesh realizes that Nancy (Nithya) has created quite a flutter in his heart, Tommy is only glad to play Cupid between the two. For the couple, the future looks all bleak, since Nancy's millionaire dad wouldn't dream of marrying her off to a struggler. Tommy suggests the only way out; get married without daddy's consent. The narrative of the film is structured in a strange fashion. Things are quite run-of-the-mill for the first hour, and you have all the necessary campus film requisites; be it the nerve-racking songs or the customary jokes, the canteen banter or the weirdo dance steps. In fact everything except studies. Then the makers hurl the first revelation in the film on your face, and you are like, that sounds pretty different. Sibi Malayil is the man who gave us Kireedam, Bharatham, Thaniyavarthanam and a lot more to cherish in Malayalam cinema. So one has pretty high expectations when choosing a Sibi movie. In that respect, Apoorva Ragam fails to meet one's expectations. But if you are a campus movie lovers, Apoorvaraagam is a different movie and dont think about Sibi Malayil's old flicks.
The movie starts in campus. It has all the typical elements that movies have identified campus life with - girls and boys in fashionable clothes, songs, crushes. There is even a scene where all lunch boxes open to show pizzas and rolls coming out of it. Evey one of them! Whatever happened to the good old days of idli and dosha?
Anyway, there is an unexpected twist to the movie in the first half itself. It should have been an interesting twist, had it been given more essence, had it been taken more convincingly. This looked more or less like a twist for the sake of a twist. Actors have not quite met the mark. Nishan's facial expressions have a lot of scope for improvement. Asif does an alright job while Nithya too seems to improve with each movie. The best was given by a new guy who took the role of 'Firoz'. Parents play an important role. Neelathamara fame Parvathy takes the role of Nithya's mom - pretty insignificant character in this one. The father's dialogues were too obviously mushy and invited a lot of booing from the audience.
The plot is not quite bad, it is just the way it is taken that makes the story mediocre. Let us hope Sibi comes back to his old self and starts creating magic on screen like he did for us for years
